Altar Servers

What We Offer

“Dear altar boys and altar girls, the closer you are to the altar, the more you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer; the more you will be nourished by the Word and the Body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out to others, bringing them the gift that you have received, giving in your turn, with enthusiasm, the joy you have received. Thank you for serving at the Lord’s altar and for making of this service a real school of faith and charity toward your neighbor. Thank you also for having begun to respond to the Lord, like the prophet Isaiah, ‘Here am I! Send me’ (Is 6:8).” This quote is from part of Pope Francis’s address to Altar Servers.

Altar Servers assist the priest before, during and after liturgical celebrations. Girls and boys, starting with grades 5, are invited to participate. Servers receive a training session to learn about their various duties assisting the priest in celebrating the Mass. Through their special service, altar servers are called to become closer to Jesus in the Eucharist. They have opportunities to serve weekend Mass, weekday Mass, and special liturgies throughout the year, such as: Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, funerals and weddings.

Bible Quote

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “this is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Volunteer Quotes

"As a grade school student I remember my years of serving at the altar very well. I enjoyed the challenges that came with serving, such as lighting the tall candles for a high Mass, ringing the church bells for a funeral, being called upon to serve the early Mass on holydays (we lived close to church) and mastering the chimes for Mass! Our servers today offer a very valuable ministry by doing the extra ministries that allow the priest to concentrate on the important aspects of the Mass. I love it when a server takes their role seriously and work
hard at doing each role well. I especially appreciate it when I see an older server consciously try to help a new server. I want to thank all our servers for the work that they do! You are important to us priests!!"~Fr. Paul
