Friendship Meals

What We Offer

The Friendship Meals Ministry, also known as Mercy Meals or Funeral Meals, provides a meal for family and friends of the recently deceased after funeral services in the Holy Spirit Parish Center. Volunteers act as coordinators, section leaders, food preparation helpers, servers, and clean-up crew. Volunteers bring covered dishes, salads or desserts for the meal, set-up and arrange the food, serve the meals as needed, and clean-up after the meal is served.

Purpose: Friendship Meals help provide comfort for family and friends of the deceased while allowing them to gather in friendship after a funeral mass and service. Families appreciate this service as it allows time and energy to be spent with each other and friends.  For our volunteers, this Ministry provides a great source of peace and contentment through performing God's work along with a chance to see the strength of family love during time of loss.

Who Belongs:  Open to all parishioners and friends interested in easing the transition for folks after the death of a loved one.  The Friendship Meals Ministry desperately needs volunteers: either for those working on-site or for those preparing meals.  Many families make small donations (cash or supplies) to the Parish for this Ministry, which benefit the maintance of the kitchen in regards to supplies and food.

How Often Do They Meet: The morning of the funeral, those engaged within the on-site Friendship Meal Ministry - who are available - convene to lay out the buffet, serve the meals and clean-up.  For those preparing food contributions, time spent in preparation, generally, occurs the day/evening prior to or the morning of the funeral.  Prepared food can be delivered to the Parish Center kitchen the day of the funeral OR to another Ministry volunteer who will be working on-site.  Communication via telephone prior to a funeral happens in order to obtain enough contributions of prepared food and on-site volunteers.  For example, the Friendship Meal Ministry Chair will contact Ministry members in order to secure prepared food donations (side dishes and desserts) and to arrange for on-site volunteers.
