SPRED (Special Religious Development)
What We Offer
So what is SPRED? SPRED is a special religious development program sponsored by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis under the auspices of the Office of Catholic Education. It is specifically designed to meet the spiritual needs of persons with developmental disabilities.
Our goal with the Holy Spirit SPRED program is to provide our friends with a community that is welcoming, fun and creative with a focus on teaching our faith! The Special Religious Development (or SPRED) program encourages spiritual growth in a way that makes the gospel more accessible and relevant to our friends and parishioners who have a unique way of learning. Our sessions combine the Word of the gospel with hands-on crafting projects. This approach builds a learning bridge that connects the message of the reading with an opportunity to contribute our talents and abilities to our Holy Spirit community. It is here that the line between participant and volunteer becomes transparent, and true fellowship in Christ is formed.
SPRED normally meets 2 times per month on Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5 at the Parish Center. We also plan several social functions during the year such as bowling and holiday parties. The SPRED group also participates in some service projects such as assisting with the Parish Festival, preparing greeting cards for parishioners and planting flowers on church grounds.
The participants in the SPRED program are called our friends. Oxford Dictionary defines Friendship as “a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people.” The mutual affection that is shared among the SPRED friends and volunteers is really hard to explain in words – there is o much joy and love when they are together.
